Last summer, we took a family trip to a huge outdoor festival, and my 5-year-old daughter somehow slipped away from us in the crowd. Those few minutes of searching felt like hours. Thankfully, a kind stranger spotted her and helped her find us, but that experience made me think about getting a GPS tracker. I like the idea of being able to check her location in real time, but I also wonder how accurate they really are in crowded places or areas with poor signal. Do they actually work well when you need them the most?

I’ve noticed more parents using these at theme parks and shopping malls, and I can see why. It’s easy for kids to wander off, even if you’re paying close attention. I don’t have kids myself, but I do wonder if trackers will eventually become a standard thing for all parents, like baby monitors. It seems like a useful tool as long as it’s not overused to the point where kids feel like they don’t have any freedom.
