In the test tube baby procedure, also known as In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), fertilization takes place outside the human body in a controlled laboratory setting. The process begins with the collection of mature eggs from the woman’s ovaries and sperm from the male partner or donor. In the laboratory, these eggs and sperm are combined in a specialized culture dish under precise conditions that mimic the natural environment of the fallopian tubes. The sperm penetrates the egg, leading to fertilization. In some cases, when sperm quality is a concern, a technique called Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is used, where a single healthy sperm is directly injected into the egg to ensure fertilization. After successful fertilization, the resulting embryos are monitored and cultured for a few days before one or more are selected for transfer into the woman’s uterus, where implantation and pregnancy may occur. This careful and advanced fertilization process greatly increases the chances of a successful pregnancy for couples facing infertility.
